ARC Mission 
The mission of the Academic Resource Center (ARC) at Harris-Stowe State University is to provide students with comprehensive academic support, services and strategies essential for academic success. We are committed to elevating students to their full potential through independent and critical thinking, creative learning and academic excellence persisting through graduation and professional endeavors. It is the ARC Team's obligation to serve students by embracing each one with the provision of quality programs, mentoring, reliable and strong support, as well as specific and appropriate standards. One of our highest priorities is placing students at the center of all of our efforts. 
Vision Statement 
The Academic Resource Center (ARC) at Harris-Stowe State University will enhance its position as a preeminent academic support center, with continued provision of a state of the art tutorial program, test accommodations center, Americans with Disabilities Act Program, well-structured developmental studies courses and highly qualified, well-informed faculty. The ARC Team will continue to work diligently to bridge gaps, fill voids and assist students with the passing of the "ARC Torch" from developmental studies courses to college level courses. Additionally, in our students' route to graduation, the ARC Team's efforts will bolster their foundations and hasten their journeys. 
ARC Services and Programs 
Programs and services are available to all currently enrolled HSSU students who endeavor to improve their academic performance. Included are: 
  • Developmental, Remedial, Co-Requisite and Foreign Language Courses
  • ARC Tutorial Laboratory
  • ARC Test Accommodations Laboratory
  • University Testing Service
  • ARC Content Workshop
  • Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Accommodations
Developmental Studies Education Program 
The ARC offers Developmental Studies courses for students who demonstrate a need to strengthen their academic skills in preparation for college level course work. Courses in mathematics, reading and writing are provided, based upon student needs. The designated courses are determined by a standardized placement test. 
The ARC Tutorial Center 
The tutorial center is an integral component of the ARC. Tutoring is offered to support academic skills related to coursework and is offered to all enrolled HSSU students. Tutorial assistance is offered in the following areas: 
  • Mathematics 
  • Science 
  • Writing 
  • Reading 
  • Spanish 
  • Accounting
  • Economics 
A broad range of hours are available to accommodate day, evening and weekend students. The center is staffed with professional and peer tutors. Students may be served individually or in small groups on a first-come/first-served basis. The schedule is posted on www.hssu.edu
Test Accommodations Center (TAC) The TAC offers testing for students who need to make-up tests in which they did not demonstrate mastery. The lab maintains multiple versions of tests and are able to administer the tests by appointment or as prescribed by faculty members. The TAC provides services university-wide. Students are required to show a picture ID before receiving tests in the TAC. Students who qualify for assistance under the Disabilities Act are accommodated under the direction of the ADA coordinator. 
University Testing Service Harris-Stowe State University requires standardized testing evaluation to determine the placement of students and to evaluate the progress of students throughout their college experience. Standardized tests also aid in academic program assessment. Testing includes: 
  • Accuplacer
  • Exit Exams for majors in Criminal Justice, Math, Biology, Business
  • HiSET (GED)
ARC Content Workshops 
Experienced, trained Workshop Mentors and Peer Learning Assistants host content workshops. The workshops involve enthusiastic dialogue, relevant application of course concepts, specific course related study techniques, strategies for exam preparation, peer collaboration, specific content practice and clarification, emotional support and various additional topics.
