The College of Education offers six degree programs in teacher education. Our students receive a well-rounded educational experience that prepares them to become highly competent and effective teachers. After completing one of the six degree programs and earning a passing score in the appropriate educational area on the state mandated Missouri Content Assessments [MOCA], a Bachelor of Science Degree and a certificate are awarded to teach in the state of Missouri. The degrees and accompanying certifications are offered in: (a) Early Childhood Education, (b) Elementary Education, (c) Middle School Education, (d) Secondary Education, (e) Special Reading, and (f) Mild/Moderate Cross-Categorical. Each Teacher Preparation Degree Program consists of the following four major components: (a) general education, covering the first two years of course work in basic disciplines, (b) specialty studies, including options in major and concentrations, (c) professional teacher education, covering the final two years of professional studies, methods and pedagogy, (d) field-based experiences, which include introductory experiences, practicum and a full semester teaching apprenticeship.
Because a major component of the conceptual model for the College of Education is the requirement for teachers to accommodate culturally and linguistically diverse learners, the six Bachelor of Science Degree programs provide students with a systematic exposure to a variety of instructional approaches. A variety of experiences will assist in developing professional educators who can work effectively in diverse settings. To fulfill this promise, our curricula are infused with 11 program elements that shape the world-view of the prospective Teacher Educator graduate. These are a knowledge of cultural diversity, group processes and individual differences, curriculum organization, learning environments, learning processes, affective/cognitive and psychomotor interactions, human growth, critical thinking, concern for others, subject content, and parent, community and social influences, social justice. As a result of these program elements, the EPP believes that its teacher educator will be able to work effectively as teachers in a variety of roles. These effective teacher educator roles are a master of content, a deliverer of content, user of technology, skilled instructor, an organizer of learning, a diagnostic prescriber, an evaluator of student progress, a manager of behavior, a counselor, a communicator with parents, an inclusionary strategist, and advocate for social justice.
Inasmuch as the conceptual model for the College of Education emphasizes the accommodation of culturally and linguistically diverse learners, the overall theme for the EPP is “Reflective Practitioner for a Diverse Society”. Finally, the EPP believes that this theme is well integrated with the institution's unique historical characteristics as a teacher preparation institution and more recently with focus on its identification as an Historically Black College and University.
Students must complete course work toward a Bachelor of Science Degree and a certificate to teach in Missouri in either (a) Early Childhood Education, (b) Elementary Education, (c) Middle School Education or (d) Secondary Education, (e) Special Reading, and (f) Mild/Moderate Cross-Categorical. Students must meet all applicable general education, major and specialization requirements of Harris-Stowe State University as well as specific certification requirements identified by the state of Missouri.
