Meet the Staff


Sean M. Spinks, MPA, CPFM

Director of Academic Success


Mr. Sean Spinks is a St. Louis native that attended Hazelwood Central High School. He attended Southeast Missouri State University and earned a Bachelor of Science in Health and Human Recreation (majoring in Sport Management and minoring in Business Administration) and a Master of Public Administration with an emphasis in Non-profit Management. He is currently in the process of earning a Doctor of Education (Ed.D) in Educational Leadership from the University of Missouri-Columbia. Mr. Spinks began his professional career at Southeast Missouri State University and is passionate about decreasing barriers that prevent student success.  “I chose Harris-Stowe State University because I believe in an affordable education that is supportive and thought-provoking for the population of students we serve; therefore I am proud to be a Hornet!”

Jennifer Elder, MSW

Senior Student Success Coach


Ms. Jennifer Elder comes from the Carbondale, IL area. She attended Southern Illinois University Carbondale, where she obtained her Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work with a minor in Sociology, as well as, her Master’s Degree in Social Work. Jennifer possesses passion in advocating for at-risk and vulnerable populations, to minimize obstacles that impede the underprivileged individual’s ability to thrive, as opposed to just survive. Jennifer was able overcome many life barriers herself, becoming a first generation college student, motivating her to aid others in their educational and life journey. She enjoys building relationships with others and perceives it to be most impactful in all endeavors. Jennifer is a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated. She strives to devote her time to cultivating her knowledge of social injustices, history, and current events, for the furthering of work in social activism. “I chose Harris Stowe because of the family dynamic, the student demographic, the challenging and impactful work, and the ability to be my genuine self, while doing what I love! I Love My H.S.S.U.!”

Darrius Harris M. Ed

Senior Student Success Coach


Mr. Darrius Harris comes from East St. Louis, IL. He attended University of Missouri- St. Louis, where he obtained his Bachelors of Arts in Communications, as well as his Master’s in Education. Mr. Harris began his professional career at University of Missouri- St. Louis and is passionate about advocating and mentoring students throughout their college experience.  Darrius is a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated. He enjoys sports and working out. “I chose Harris-Stowe because Harris-Stowe gave me an opportunity to grow professionally, while doing something that I love. The family dynamic and being around students with similar backgrounds has inspired me to positively impact their lives. Therefore, what a great day to be a hornet!

Shavonda Calhoun, M. Ed

Student Success Coach


Ms. Shavonda Calhoun is a native of East St. Louis, IL where she attended East St. Louis Senior High School. Her postsecondary education was completed at Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville where she received a Bachelor of Science in Psychology with a minor in English Literature and a Master of Science in Education. Ms. Calhoun is passionate about having a direct impact on student success.

"I chose Harris-Stowe State University because I am passionate about helping others successfully maneuver through their journey and obtaining their four-year degree.  As a first generation student myself, I can relate to the feeling of not knowing where to go for resources. As a Student Success Coach my goal is to have a holistic approach to optimizing student success. “
